Fine Arts Extravaganza slated at Telstar High School

From the Lewiston Sun Journal written by Dan Fayen, Staff Writer, May 25, 2011

BETHEL — Telstar Middle and High Schools will serve up an artistic buffet for the senses on Wednesday night. “This year’s Telstar Arts Exhibit, which features a wide variety of films, music and art, will take place at Telstar High School, located off Route 26 in Bethel, from 5 to 8 p.m.,” Melissa Prescott, Telstar Middle School art teacher, said. Wednesday’s Telstar Arts Exhibit is free and open to the public.

The event features many offerings, according to Prescott, including the presentation of student-produced films in the auditorium, an eclectic coffeehouse featuring several acts of students playing music and reading poetry and a large display of multi-media artworks. Refreshments will be available at the show.

“This is the first year we have the middle school participating in the event,” Prescott said. “We have a brand new high school art teacher this year, Sara Holmes,” Prescott said, “and she was instrumental in bringing the two schools together for this event.”

“If the public is unable to stay the full three hours of the show,” Prescott said, “I recommend that they come between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., when they can catch the most offerings by the two schools.”

Falmouth MS Jazz at the State House

Jazz band performs in Augusta

Famouth Middle School jazz band

Last week I stood to stretch from sitting for a time in my cubby and gazed out at the State House dome. I looked down and there I saw a group of students in the parking lot with musical instruments. I grabbed my camera and ran down the 5 flights of steps with hopes of learning who they were.

I got there in time to speak to the three adults standing by the open van with instruments in the back. The students were all gone but the band director, Jerry Barry from Falmouth Middle School told me that the jazz band had just been in to perform at the opening of the House session.

Jerry’s excitement helped me to imagine the students playing and the pride in all of them. Luckily Jerry had photos of them he had taken earlier and he was kind enough to include in this post. The one of the three adults is Jerry and two parent volunteers.
