Happy New School Year

Changing of the seasons

Sculptures at the Schoodic Sculpture Symposium

Starting a new school year is like the changing of the seasons. I always try to do something on Labor Day weekend that is fun and different because it feels like going from summer to fall (even though I know the calendar doesn’t match that).

This year my husband and I traveled to Cutler in Washington County to hike the Bold Coast Trail. It is a place that I have read about and have been wanting to go for some time.

Finally, everything lined up and we headed north yesterday. We stopped in Prospect Harbor to see the work of the artists at the Schoodic Sculpture Symposium and then on to Machias. Early to rise we reached the trail head at 7:30 and headed for the coast. The sweeping vista was so much more dramatic than any of the photos I’ve seen of it. Every time we were at a spot along the water it looked slightly different. The colors from the light, the water, the shoreline of rocks, grasses, trees, bushes, and all the details impacted my site dramatically. As well, the weather kept changing from sunshine to fog to grey stormy- like skies and back again. The temperature kept changing as well; damp, cool, hot, humid, chilly and down right pleasant!

Bold Coast Trail in Cutler

In spite of the many changes, it was a most delightful day, a great way to spend Labor Day and the last official day of “summer” in my teacher mind! I know I can always take out my photos of the day and be right back there at the Bold Coast!

I hope you had a wonderful day as well and Happy New School Year to YOU! May your school year be filled with success for all your students!

Happy New School Year!
