Black History Resources

Teacher2Teacher gathered resources for teachers on Black History. Below are some of those resources on relevant topics for today’s teachers. These were originally provided during Black History month but educators understand that this topic should not be limited to one part of the year only. I recommend that you have some time before clicking on the links below. You’ll be sure find plenty of ideas that will lead you to more ideas.


  • Arts Education and African American history, a collection of resources from the Kennedy Center ArtsEdge. ArtsEdge has reorganized their digital resources and I’m sure you’ll find their data base filled with resources you can use on the topic and beyond.
  • Resources from Smithsonian Education Black History feature various collections, from “The Blues and Langston Hughes” to “Harlem Renaissance: A Reading List.” It’s a great place to let your students explore primary sources, and there is something for students of all ages.
  • The Library of Congress has lesson plans for teachers and primary sources for students to explore, including artwork, baseball cards, political cartoons, and photographs. Also be sure to check out the Library’s civil rights-themed collection.
  • PBS includes an article about the documentary film titled More Than a Month about why Black History Month should not only be one month – the coldest and shortest month of the year. The young filmmakers cross country story focuses on the four components: education, history, identity, and commercialism.
  • Scholastic provides useful resources for arts educators on African American Heritage. Arts and culture resources including the History of Jazz with Wynton Marsalis.
  • National Education Association: Integrating African-American Culture & History into Your Curriculum. Resources on and about poets including The Poet’s Voice: Langston Hughes and You.

In this ASCD article Historical Black Excellence Provides a Blueprint for Reimagining Education you’ll find Gholdy Muhammad’s review of the reality of the inequities in the education system for black and brown children. Gholdy has been studying the history of African American education and literacy development in the U.S. from the 19th century forward. The article provides a deep look at the facts from the past that frame the what and why of today’s curriculum.

UnboundEd provides a anti-racist tool kit – a set of resources to help school communities disrupt inequity by inspiring reflections, conversations, and actions on issues of race, racism, and bias. There are several resources within the .pdf toolkit that are downloadable.

A valuable article called The Do’s and Don’ts of Teaching Black History from Learning for Justice. I find that the Learning for Justice website is very valuable to support teaching and learning.

Published in this months issue of the ASCD Educational Leadership publication is an article written by Robert Root-Bernstein and Michele Root-Bernstein called The Art and Craft of Science. The authors provide many examples of individuals and their success in science that is founded on their experiences, knowledge and skills in art.

The article begins with this:

Scientific discovery and innovation can depend on engaging more students in the arts.
Suppose you have a talented child with a profound interest in science. This child has a choice of going to an academically elite high school or to a high school where the curriculum focuses on training mechanics, carpenters, and designers. Where do you send her? It’s a no-brainer, right? To the academically elite high school.
Except that Walter Alvarez, a doctor and physiologist of some renown, decided to send his scientifically talented son, Luis, to an arts and crafts school where Luis took industrial drawing and woodworking instead of calculus. Big mistake? Not exactly. Luis Alvarez won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1968. He attributed his success to an uncanny ability to visualize and build almost any kind of experimental apparatus he could imagine (Alvarez, 1987).
Suppose you have a baby Einstein. The question is, would you know it? After all, Einstein was certainly not a standout in his mathematics and physics classes. Yet he also ended up with a Nobel Prize.

The news is peppered lately with articles about the Arts

This post provides you with links to articles that I found interesting and think you will as well! Some of the articles below are on the newly released, April 2012, report: Arts Education in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools: 1999-2000 and 2009-10 from a congressionally mandated study on arts education in public K–12 schools. You might wonder why I would include all of the articles on the same topic?! It provides you with the perspectives of different writers. Of course, I urge you to go to the report itself which is linked above.

ASCD- Brief on policy priorities

The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) released an information brief on policy priorities entitled Reaching for a Well-Rounded Education Creates Challenges for Educators. If you are short on time I suggest you go to the link and watch the video on the first page provided by David Griffith, ASCDs Director of Public Policy. He stresses the importance of all subjects which includes the Arts.

If you have time read on from there. If not, scroll to pages 10-12 and read the segment called Promoting the Value of Arts Education. This includes information from the Executive Director of the National Art Education Association and an audio clip from an art teacher who works with students and teachers.

ASCD provides their recommendations for a well-rounded education and can be accessed at this webpage
