Opportunities for young people
YOUNG PEOPLE’S CONCERT
The 2019 Bangor Symphony Orchestra invites students in grades 3 – 8 to attending the Young People’s Concert at the Collins Center for the Arts: Monday, May 20, 2019, 10:00 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. Lucas Richman, Music Director and Conductor for the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, has made it his mission to instill in young children the awareness of music as an integral part of their lives. This year’s concert theme is “Orchestral Stories”. Each selection will display how composers use the orchestra to tell a story through the unique arrangements of musical notes, gestures and instrumentation. Orders are filled on a first come, first serve basis.
The hour-long education and music program is supplemented with an instructional packet for students and teachers providing information about the orchestra and the selections that will be featured. Concerts are open to public, private, and homeschooled children.
Tickets are $3 each for students and teachers. We will fulfill orders on a first come, first serve basis.Reservations should be requested by Friday, March 30, 2019, and can be made by phone, fax, or mail.

MUSICIAN IN YOUR CLASSROOM
Have a BSO musician come to your classroom! You are invited to be part of a pilot program that would bring a BSO musician to your classroom prior to the Young People’s Concert to give a personal introduction to the symphony and a brief overview of the concert you will be attending. There is no cost for YPC attendees for this program. Availability of musicians for a potential visit may be limited and will be determined on a first-come, first-served basis. This year’s concert theme is “Musical Poetry”. The repertoire will highlight the powerful link between music and poetry while exposing and acquainting students with the instruments of the orchestra.

The BSO turns the spotlight on its own members in January with a true Orchestral Showcase. Principal Harp Mo Nichols, Principal Flute Jonathan LaPerle, Principal Clarinet Kristen Finkbeiner, Principal Oboe Michael Dressler, and Principal Trumpet Bill Whitener will all shine in diverse repertoire, including Schoenberg’s Notturno for Harp and Strings, Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro, and Barber’s Capricorn Concerto. The strings also get to show their mettle in Conni Ellisor’s Conversations in Silence and Edvard Grieg’s beautiful Holberg Suite.

Each voucher admits up to four children 18-and-under for just $4 each when accompanied by at least one adult. Up to two accompanying adults can receive the discounted ticket price of $14. Bay Chambers
Bay Chambers invites middle and high school music teachers to bring your students to their free matinee for Che Malambo on Wednesday, March 29 at 11am at Strom Auditorium in Rockport. Che Malambo is a traditional Argentinean troupe of ‘cowboys’ who dance and perform on percussion instruments. This all-male ensemble will perform for a public concert on Tuesday, March 28 and we are offering the free matinee, first come, first served the following day. “Huge” is an understatement when describing the BSO’s January 2016 Masterworks concert. Mahler’s sprawling, thrilling Symphony No. 1 anchors a program that also includes the premiere of a new work by Lucas Richman, the Prelude to Act III of Lohengrin, and Hummel’s famous Concerto for Trumpet, featuring Pittsburgh Symphony principal trumpet George Vosburgh.

The Bangor Symphony Orchestra continues its 119th season on Sunday, February 1 at 3 p.m. at the Collins Center for the Arts in Orono with Midori and More! A pre-concert talk begins at 2 p.m.

The Know Your Orchestra! voucher program encourages students to become acquainted with classical music and their home orchestra. Each voucher admits up to four K-12 students for free when accompanied by at least one adult. Up to two accompanying adults can receive a discounted ticket price of $10.00. Each free ticket and adult ticket is subject to an additional $3.00 box office handling fee. The voucher below may be used for any of the 2014-15 season Masterworks concerts.
