ASCD Teacher Impact Grants (TIGs)

Screen Shot 2016-05-10 at 8.46.47 PMTIGs provide funding and support directly to teachers for promising teacher-led, administrator-supported ideas, programs, or initiatives to improve education. These grants allow teachers to develop and execute projects that can serve as models to be replicated and scaled.

The program provides the flexibility, funding, and evaluation support necessary to meet the unique needs of promising teacher-led projects. The grants cultivate the expertise of teachers and help to position them as leaders driving transformation in schools, districts, and states.

How Do I Apply?
Applicants must provide a summary of their proposed project, including a specific budget narrative for how TIG funds will be used to support the overall goals and objectives of the proposed project. Proposed projects should be for the 2016–17 school year, with funding available starting August 31, 2016. The estimated average size of a single award is $10,000.

Application Period
The application period will be open from May 16 to June 16, 2016. The application deadline is June 16, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. eastern time.

Farmers Insurance Thank America’s Teachers

Through Thank America’s Teachers, Farmers Insurance is giving away more than $1 million in two separate grant opportunities again in 2016.

Their $2,500 grant program addresses teachers’ day-to-day classroom needs and the $100,000 Dream Big Teacher Challenge empowers teachers’ educational visions for their schools and the community at large.

One hundred eighty $2,500.00 grants and eight $100,000 grants will be awarded. Submit your proposal by May 31, 2016.

Funding Opportunities

 National Council of Teachers of Mathematics

The NCTM is accepting applications from teachers of pre-K-2 mathematics for projects that incorporate music into the elementary school classroom to help young students learn mathematics. For 2015–16, grants of up to $3,000 will be awarded to individual classroom teachers or small groups of teachers collaborating in one grade or across grade levels. Any acquisition of equipment must support the proposed plan but not be the primary focus of the grant. Proposals must address the combining of mathematics and music, planning for improving students’ learning of mathematics, and/or the anticipated impact on students’ achievement. P. Buckley Moss Foundation Accepting Applications For Arts-Integrated Education Programs
The mission of the P. Buckley Moss Foundation for Children’s Education is to promote the integration of the arts into all educational programs, with a special focus on children who learn in different ways. The foundation is accepting grant applications from educators who need financial assistance to maintain or implement an arts education program. Grants of up to $1,000 will be awarded to support new or evolving programs that integrate the arts into educational programming. Although the purpose of the grant program is to assist teachers who wish to establish an effective way of using the arts to teach children who learn differently, proposed projects must serve all children in the classroom, including those with no trouble learning in a general education setting. Teens Teaching Tech
Apply for a grant to hold your own Teens Teaching Tech program in your community. Older adults have gadgets like digital cameras, tablets, mobile phones, and apps that they find challenging to use. The goal of this program is to help senior citizens feel comfortable with ever-evolving technology. The applicant must be part of a school-based club or homeschool community organization in the United States. The $250.00 grants are provided to high school clubs: community service, National Honors Society, and computer clubs. Deadline: September 15

Laura W. Bush Traveling Fellowship 
The State Department is currently accepting applications to help fund innovative travel around the world by young people who use education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, and/or communication and information to build strong ties among nations. The fellowship is intended for American college students who have not been afforded many opportunities to travel abroad. Through 4 to 6 weeks of travel anywhere in the world, you can have the opportunity to interact with individuals from other nations while promoting the goals of UNESCO! Deadline: September 22

Captain Planet Foundation Grants 
Captain Planet Foundation will accept small grant requests for amounts between $500 – $2,500.  All proposed activities must be project-based, projects must be performed by youth; and projects must have real environmental outcomes. The Captain Planet Foundation primarily makes grants to U.S.-based schools and organizations with an annual operating budget of less than $3 million.  International requests are also accepted, with preference given to international projects that have U.S.-based partners. Preferential consideration is given to requests who have secured at least 50% matching or in-kind funding for their projects.   Deadline: September 30

Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Grants 
Whatever goals and dreams you have for your school, Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Grant Program can help fulfill them with grants of $2,000 to $5,000. K-12 public schools as well as school parent-teacher groups are eligible. Preference is given to funding requests that have a permanent impact such as facility enhancement (both indoor and outdoor) and landscaping or clean up projects.  Deadline: October 15

Ben & Jerry’s Foundation Grassroots Organizing for Social Change Program
The Grassroots Organizing for Social Change Program supports non-profit grassroots, constituent-led organizations across the country that are using direct action, grassroots community-organizing strategies to accomplish their goals. Proposals should align with the Foundation’s broad interests in social justice, environmental justice and sustainable food systems. They fund organizations with budgets of $500,000 or less. Grant awards are up to $20,000 for a one-year period.                      Deadline: October 15

NYLC Youth Leadership for Service-Learning Excellence Award
The Youth Leadership for Service-Learning Excellence Award recognizes service-learning programs and projects that demonstrate outstanding youth leadership. This award focuses on projects that show a high level of youth initiative in all areas including identifying an authentic need, planning the service, and putting that plan into action. Teams of young people participating in service-learning projects can apply.  Deadline: November 7

NYLC Service-Learning Practitioner Leadership Award
The Service-Learning Practitioner Leadership Award recognizes those who have equipped young people to lead and serve, both through their direct work with youth and by nurturing other practitioners. Nominations are accepted from the general public, and a committee of leaders from the service-learning field will select the winners.  Deadline: November 7


Washington County Arts Ed Funding

General Information:
Recognizing the important role the arts can play in a school’s curriculum, the donors established this fund to encourage teachers in grades three through five to work with professional artists to bring the arts into the classroom and, in addition, to integrate a variety of art forms into the standard curriculum. The Fund challenges classroom teachers to explore innovative approaches to meet the following basic guidelines:

  • The artist(s) work(s) with the all the students in the grade(s) participating in the project
  • The artist(s) works with all the participating teachers to explore the integration of the arts into the standard curriculum. If agreed upon by the artist and teachers, other interested faculty may also participate.

Each year the Fund will award five grants, up to a maximum of $1,000 each. The application process involves a simple two-page project proposal, which addresses the following: anticipated benefits; timeline and milestones; possible barriers; and a use-of-funds budget. To further simplify the process, application submission and much of the communication will be completed by email.

Grant Guidelines:
Teachers will work with professional artists from the visual and/or performing arts, including but not limited to film, video, and other media, theater arts, music, dance and creative writing. Together, the teacher and artists will design a program in which teachers and students will learn through participating in the art form. The artist will also work with the teachers to develop a curriculum that will incorporate the arts in a meaningful way, helping the school to meet the Maine Learning Results.

Eligibility Requirements:
All public school teachers of grades three through five in Washington County in even years and in Penobscot County in odd years are eligible for consideration. Although not required, teachers of the three grades are encouraged to work collaboratively to present one project, and elementary schools with low enrollments (100 or less students) are encouraged to present one project for the school.

If there is an arts teacher in the relative field involved, that teacher should participate in the design and implementation of the project.

At least 75% of the funds awarded should be budgeted to artist’s fees.

Project Evaluation:
All grant recipients will be required to submit a project evaluation report upon completion of the project. The evaluation will describe how students and teachers have learned from the project, how the arts have been integrated into the curriculum, and how the project has helped the school further the Maine Learning Results.

Applications must be submitted by 5:00 PM, January 31. Awards will be announced in mid-February. All applicants will receive notice upon receipt of the application and of the committee’s final decisions

Painting for a Purpose

The meartsed blog interviewed Tina Edwards who tells the story of how individuals with a passion for painting and caring about education and youth are making a difference.

1.   Please tell the meartsed readers about “Painting for a Purpose”. How did it get started, whose idea was it for the project, how long has it been in place?

Painting for a Purpose (PFP) got started in a couple of ways.

I took a “Fanciful Furniture Painting” class in Cape Cod in the summer of 2006.  I really loved it. One of the things that I loved was how easy it was to get started and another was the great group of women who had been attending this class for years. The class meets weekly. They were all so creative and cheered each other on by giving ideas and support. When I came back to Maine, I really wanted to find a group to paint with.

In 2009, I reconnected with a friend, Jane Ellis. She and I had worked together in the Portland Public Schools and she had recently retired. We went for a walk one day and began talking about how much we liked to paint. She has done watercolors for several years. We got talking about starting a painting group similar to what I had experienced in Cape Cod. That led to a discussion about the group having a purpose in addition to the camaraderie of  painting together.  We wanted our group to “paint for a purpose.”

Jane and I had both been involved in projects where young people had written grants. Both of us were inspired by what young people saw as important and the work they were willing to do to make change happen. We knew that this what the “purpose” we wanted to support.

2.  What are the main goals/focus for Painting for a Purpose?

We are a group of people who love to paint and who care about education and youth in Portland. PFP brings people together to create hand painted “whimsical” furniture, hosts an annual auction to sell the furniture, and uses the proceeds to fund youth led service learning grants. PFP meets weekly as a group to paint together.


  • To have fun together while painting and create camaraderie
  • To raise money for our annual auction
  • To help students put their ideas about how to make a difference in action
  • To be a funding source for youth led service learning grants in the Portland Public Schools.

3.   How many grants have you given out?

We have given out 14 grants in the past 2 years.  All of them have been written by students. They may apply for up to $500.

4.   What are the profits are used? How do students apply for the funding, what is it used for, do parents get involved?

Students apply for funding through an application process. They must identify a problem /issue in the community that they want to address. They must research the problem so that they have an understanding of the issue. This may involve conducting interviews, compiling data, or doing internet research. They need to understand the issue in order to propose a solution that will make a difference.  They must have an adult “ally” to sign off on the grant.

This person can offer guidance and support; however, the grant proposal has to be written by the students and be their project.

5.   Is the project growing? If so, what do you think has helped it along the way?

Yes, the project is growing. In our first year, we gave out 5 grants. In our second year, we gave out nine grants. We are an all volunteer organization so it is the efforts of people helping out that has made a huge difference. The more people learn about what we are doing, the more people then say—Hey that is a good idea. How can I help?

This year, we are doing something a little different. We have designed wooden lobster boats and dories for adult and student artists to paint. Working with the art teachers at the Portland Public High Schools, we have 12 art students paired with 12 local artists. They are working together as pairs to paint a lobster boat and dory. We also have 12 other adult artists who are also painting lobster boats.  These will be auctioned off in a live auction on November 8, 2012 in addition to the other painted items that we will have for the silent auction.

6.   What do you imagine (hope for) Painting for a Purpose will look like in 5 years, 2017?

  • I hope that we are a sustainable funding source for youth led service learning that the schools in Portland can depend on.
  • I hope that the core weekly painting group has grown to about 20 dedicated painters who are enthused about painting and the project.
  • I hope that the core weekly painting group continues to grow as painters and artists.
  • I hope that people in the city look forward to our auction because of the beautiful items that are for sale and because of the wonderful projects that students are doing.

7.   Which part of the project has been the most inspiring? (to you and others who have gotten involved)

I love the excitement and fun of painting together on a weekly basis. I love working with the schools and meeting new people in the Portland community. Mostly, I love hearing from students about how they want to make a difference.  It is always exciting for me to read the grants and equally as exciting to hear about what they learned in the process.

Last year I worked closely with one particular group and at the end, I asked then what was their biggest learning. Overwhelmingly it was to “Never Give Up.”  Very powerful words that I would hope for every student to learn.

The auction is scheduled for November 8, 5:30 to 7:30 PM at Grace Restaurant, 15 Chestnut Street, Portland, $10 for individuals, $25 for families. Thank you Tina for telling the story of PFP!
