Nancy Salmon is a member of the Maine Arts Assessment Initiative’s Leadership Team. She is a dancer who has contributed enormously over the years to arts education in Maine. She attended the MAAI Mega MDIHS at Mount Desert Island High School on November 25,2014. Below you will find her review of the day. Thank you Nancy!

Being a relative newbie on the MAAI Leadership Team, the Mega-Regional workshop at MDI High School was my first. I arrived early and friendly teachers directed me toward the “arts wing.” I knew immediately when I found it – Art EVERYWHERE! Student work on all the hall walls, three visual art studios, a beautiful and LARGE music room and a Dance Studio!

My assignment was to help register people – actually two MDI students took that on, and I was the “elder” helper handling any monetary transactions. Registration table was the perfect place for me to put names, faces, places, and teaching roles together.

I participated in two workshops even though I’m not a public school teacher. I totally enjoyed Jane Snider and Lisa Ingraham, both visual arts teachers, workshop Studio Habits of Mind: Using the “Hidden Curriculum” to Encourage Student Autonomy (or anyone’s autonomy). A couple books they use and introduced were Studio Thinking 2 and From Ordinary to Extraordinary. Jane’s and Lisa’s workshop was a perfect introduction to some very useable concepts and exercises regardless of art discipline. Participants included teachers of all the arts.

My second workshop, Stir-Crazy: A Movement Tool Kit for the Sedentary School Day was conducted by Stevie McGary, a new teaching artist on the Maine Arts Commission roster. Lots of activities in Stevie’s “tool kit” to use students’ fidgety energy in a productive, creative way. Many of the activities could be used right in the classroom.

Back in the dance studio after lunch, Stevie took us through a short dance class, demonstrating the kinds of things she does in her visiting artist/residency work. (The video of the day that Charlie Johnson created will be posted on the Maine Arts Ed blog in the near future).

For the afternoon session we divided into 2 groups, performing arts teachers (all music teachers in this instance) and visual arts teachers. I participated in Rob Westergard’s session. The session was an opportunity to share successes, challenges and helpful ideas regarding Teacher Effectiveness and Proficiency.

All in all, a success! I’m reminded of how totally impressed I am with the smarts, the passion, the commitment to the arts and STUDENTS that arts teachers are in spite of all the challenges that exist in our public school environment. Applause for all!

Perhaps you are at Mount Desert Island High School right now enjoying and soaking up ideas, food for thought, and exchanging your best practices. Today is the first Maine Arts Assessment Initiative’s (MAAI) Mega-regional workshop being held during phase 4, 2014-15 school year. There are 55 arts educators participating. A great big THANK YOU to Charlie Johnson and the MDIHS arts staff and administration for opening up their beautiful school for this professional development opportunity.

The MAAI Teacher Leaders are offering these workshops today Studio Habits, Making Evidence of Learning from a Sequence of Artworks, Efficient and Effective Assessment in the Elementary Music Classroom, Standards-Based Grading and Assessing for Proficiency, Stir-Crazy: A Movement Tool Kit for the Sedentary Classroom, It’s Elementary, My Dear, and Resources, Resources, and MORE Resources for Music Educators are all offered today.

The PM session is devoted to sharing and learning about where other schools and districts are on the pathway of Proficiency-Based Education and Teacher Effectiveness. The individual workshops will not be repeated at other Megas however, the PM session will be repeated at each one.

The MAAI Teacher Leaders have made a commitment not only to increase their knowledge but to share their learnings and current practices with others. Many of you have heard me say that “none of us is as smart as all of us” and the Megas are designed to share all that SMART!

University of Maine, Orono, Mega-regional workshop, Thursday, April 2, 2015 

The Maine Arts Assessment Initiative (MAAI) is once again offering Mega-regional workshops in five locations across the state of Maine during the 2014-15 school year. The workshops are being facilitated by the MAAI Teacher Leaders, different workshops scheduled for each location. Yes, you can register for more than one!

  • Friday, March 6 Aroostook county
  • Friday, March 13 Oxford Hills Middle School, South Campus
  • Thursday, April 2 UMaine, Orono

Learn how setting criteria with students sets the stage for formative assessment. Participants will create a small art work and practice the use of exemplars, setting criteria, and use of assessments to inform instruction.  Come explore the benefits that come from student self assessments. Grades 5-12

Efficient and Effective Assessment in the Elementary Music Classroom

When you see 200 or more students each week, assessing everyone is challenging.  The lack of time seems insurmountable!  At this collaborative session, we will discuss ways to make assessments efficient for both class time and your time, while still keeping them effective for teaching and learning.  The presentation is directed toward elementary classroom music, but all are welcome to attend and give input. Grades K-5

Multiple Pathways: Helping Students Achieve Proficiency in ELA and Social Studies through Performing Arts Class!

With the new proficiency based learning law, students must be allowed a variety of ways to demonstrate proficiency. This workshop will examine cross disciplinary units that assess, not only drama standards, but ELA and social studies standards as well.  Specifically, we will look at performance assessments that evaluate ELA and social studies standards and can be demonstrated in the performing arts classroom but count towards a students ELA and social studies requirements. Grades 7-12

Rappin’ Differentiated Instruction and Implementing Standards Based Grading

Formative assessments are instrumental in giving teachers the tools they need to discover where each of their students are in the learning process.  Participants  will learn how to use this data to differentiate instruction for content, process and product to meet the needs of all learners. Mega-regional Workshop at USM

March 7 – in Lisa Ingraham’s words…

On Friday I attended the Maine Arts Assessment Initiative (MAAI) Mega-Regional workshop at USM, this time as a participant rather than a teacher leader. I got to take it all in without a focus on preparing for my own workshop. I met many arts educators I haven’t had the opportunity to spend time with before, quite a few with a similar elementary visual arts background. And I finally got to attend other teacher leaders’ workshops that I have been dying to see since first hearing about them at last summer’s MAAI Institute!

There were a couple of big take-aways from the day for me. The first was as a result of Amy Cousins’ workshop “From Overwhelmed to in Control: Power Standards Help Connect the Dots”. Before the session was over I began mentally planning for when I could really dive into power standards (most likely this summer), and I realized that while I have done a substantial amount of work around the what, why, and how of assessment since the MAAI Institute, it is an ongoing process. While “ta das!” regarding student learning should be celebrated, as a life-long learner I then look toward the next step. Thanks Amy for showing me the next step!

My second take-away was as a result of another participant’s comment that when she thinks about her curriculum, she considers what she would like her students to know and be able to do as adults. This changed my view of the art curriculum from the five years I get to spend with them from kindergarten through grade four and extended it ahead into the future. It left me with the question, “What kind of relationship would I like my students to have with the visual arts as grown-ups?”

100_3166Time with visual and performing arts teachers is always creatively well spent. The day was filled with questions and answers both small and large. I look forward to the Mega-Regional workshop April 11th at the University of Maine, Orono!

Feedback is clear

IMG_3726The Maine Arts Assessment Initiative offered an all day Mega-regional workshop yesterday at the beautiful Ellsworth High School. Forty-four educators attended from surrounding and had the opportunity to spend the morning in two different workshops. The teacher leaders offered workshops on digital portfolios and the digital classroom, gifted and talented music programs, looking outside the school day to fulfill the high school arts requirement, the MLRs and music ensembles, reporting on student progress, student empowerment, and advocacy.

IMG_3709The two afternoon sessions were spent on technology and the Arts and proficiency. The focus for the proficiency session was on answering “what does proficiency look and sound like in the visual or performing arts classroom?” The conversation was very worthwhile. Some teachers left with more questions than answers. The visual art teachers worked in small groups to look at student work samples. Below are some of the questions included from the both visual and performing arts groups.

  • Does proficiency really include growth of the student over time?
  • How do we chart the artist growth through the process and not just the end result?
  • How can we use the data collection to make sure we hold teachers accountable for teaching the curriculum and therefore allowing the kids the opportunity to BE proficient?
  • How will students find the time to become proficient? If a student is continually not meeting they would always be behind.

Some of what the teachers learned:

  • Being clear with students what the standards are.
  • Recording students to demonstrate proficiency.
  • There are many aspects to showing proficiency.
  • That I am accomplishing more thank I realized but I need to create better documentation.

MAAI Mega-Regional Workshop a Success

Yesterday at USM

Almost 75 arts educators attended the mega-regional workshop yesterday at USM Portland. The early feedback points to a success! The workshops offered a variety of opportunities on arts assessment, creativity, curriculum, instruction, technology, and others! This post includes some photos of yesterdays event and a later blog post will include workshop resources for those of you interested.

Yesterday’s workshop information and the two coming up in Easton, March 22 and Ellsworth, March 29 is located at You must register to attend. The MAAI workshop are a collaboration with MLTI and are FREE with contact hours included.
